Yung6ix - One Tweet [Artwork]
Yung6ix ruffled a lot of feathers when he tweeted that he’s the best rapper in Nigeria. A lot of hip-hop acts took offense to it and decided to take their grievances to Yung6ix disses on wax.
Well, check out his latest tune, One Tweet (Notice) that kinda addresses the noise, but not dwelling on it. In reality it’s more a celebratory track than a track about who’s offending who.

Bolt offers to train Bale

Bolt offers to train Bale

Bale
World-record holder in 100 metre and double Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt believes Gareth Bale is the fastest footballer in the world, but says he can make the Real Madrid winger even quicker.
Despite concerns over his fitness due to a lack of pre-season, the Wales star clocked an incredible 40kmh during Real Madrid’s draw with Villarreal in his debut. That is almost 25mph, just 2mph behind Bolt’s world-record speed.
And Bolt says he will teach Bale how to run even faster if the player and Real Madrid want him to.
“I think Gareth is probably the fastest player in the world at the moment – but I will help him with his sprinting if he wants,” Bolt said.
The world’s fastest man added that he trained with Bale’s new team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo in a session too, and is clearly willing to do the same for the former Tottenham man.
Bolt said: “It is not just about how fast you can accelerate – but also when you have the football at your feet about balance while you are sprinting as well. I helped Ronaldo with his sprinting in a training session – and look what he has go on to achieve since then.
“I have a lot of respect for Real Madrid – and if they and Gareth want my help I am happy to fly in and take a private training session with Gareth. I hear that he has been clocking speeds close to me – but it is about technique as well.
“I know I could make him an even better player than he already is.”
Bolt, a devoted Manchester United fan, recently spent time with Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero before the weekend’s derby clash at the Etihad.

ASUU strike’ll soon be over – NUC

ASUU strike’ll soon be over – NUC

Minister of State for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike
Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Julius Okojie, says he is confident that the protracted strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities will soon be called off.
Okojie, who spoke on Wednesday in Abuja at a meeting with journalists, said the commission had been doing everything within its powers to ensure a speedy resolution of the issues raised by ASUU so that students could return school.
He said, “We are part of the system and we understand the issues, we are meeting with members of the union all the time and the issues are being tackled.
“So, we are optimistic that the strike will soon be called off and our children can go back to school in the shortest possible time.”
The NUC boss also reacted to the call by ASUU for NUC to be scrapped, saying “the call is not in good faith as the commission has not gone to sleep over its duties.”
Also speaking on the recurrent disagreement between   the commission and some professional bodies over accreditation and running of certain courses by some universities, Okojie acknowledged that there were issues that needed to be resolved between both parties.
“There is no country in the world where regulatory bodies and professional bodies go to regulate at the same time. So, it is true we are having problems with professional bodies in carrying out our mandate, but the issues too will soon be resolved and we can move on,” he said.
The Executive Secretary, who said that the commission had closed many faculties found to be unfit to run courses in certain universities, admitted that, “it is not easy to be a regulator.”

When YABATECH students rose against violence

When YABATECH students rose against violenceWhen YABATECH students rose against violence

The Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) in Lagos was in turmoil last Thursday, as some students went after a group of boys suspected to be cultists, who macheted a student. The action disrupted academic and social activities. WALE AJETUNMOBI and MARK ORGU (300-Level Educational Management, School of Technical Education, YABATECH) report.
SOME students were having a nice time in the Complex Hall’s common room when the boys arrived, blocking the entrance. They stopped people from entering or leaving. Unaware of what was happening, Chinonso Anyankura, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the National Association of Anambra State Students, arrived on the scene. He insisted on going in and the boys, who were suspected to be cultists descended on him. The attack on their colleague infuriated other students.
The following day, they went after the boys, who macheted Chinonso.
They abandoned their books and a test to seek redress for a colleague. They shocked members of the college community, who woke up to the students’ fury.
Many students were watching a UEFA Champions league match in the Complex Hall common room on Wednesday when the suspected cultists dealt Chinonso machete blows.
Eyewitnesses told CAMPUSLIFE that trouble started when the suspected cultists stormed the room.
A student, who pleaded not to be named, said:“The guy (Chinonso) did not know they were cultists and tried to challenge them. They pounced on him; he was boxed to a corner where he was attacked with cutlasses.”
Other students scampered for safety as the victim was being beaten by the assailants, who left him in a pool of his own blood. He was rushed to a clinic on the campus, where he was stabilised. The suspected cultists fled.
The students regrouped and chased the cultists to an off-campus area, but the assailants were not found. The incident triggered a midnight protest by occupants of the Complex Hall, who said cult attacks on students were becoming rampant. They cited cases of cultists invading the campus to harass students.
The protesters, who vandalised properties in the hall, said the campus was becoming unsafe for them, because “students now live at the mercy of criminals”. The protest was led by Students’ Union Government (SUG) officials.
The next day, students refused to go back to their hostel. They gathered in front of the ETF Hall, barricading the main and alternative gates. They prevented staff members from entering the campus and demanded to see the Rector, Dr Margret Ladipo, who was not around during the demonstration.
The make-shift tents raised by Techno Mobile, which sponsors the ongoing Rector’s Cup competition, were vandalised.
Efforts by some staff members to placate the students failed. The protesters stood their ground that they wanted to speak to the Rector. CAMPUSLIFE learnt that the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Mr O.T. Raheem, who tried to pacify the protesters, was pelted with sachet water. He left the scene hurriedly.
The school security personnel watched as students used all sorts of materials to barricade the main gate. Policemen deployed to maintain order were pelted with stones and sachet water by the students, but they did not fire any shot.
The protesters, who went to the hostels to call out more students, prevented anyone from taking their pictures. An ND 1 student, who took pictures of the protest with his phone, was attacked; he was beaten to a pulp before he was rescued by the Man O’ War cadets. The student was taken to the clinic by the cadets.
A member of the Students’ Union Representative Council, who did not want his name in print, accused the management of indifference to the students’ plight.
“Just last month, a student was shot by a group of boys outside the school gate in the night. Nobody said anything because the shooting did not occur on the campus. As the cultists left the school yesterday (Wednesday) after they injured Chinonso, we learnt they went to disrupt a students’ departmental party in Yaba. For how long will cultists harass students while the management remains indifferent?” he asked.
An ND II student, who simply identified himself as Amadi, described Chinonso as non-violent. He said: “I still saw him a few minutes before he was attacked. I don’t believe that he is a cult member as some people claimed. Even after he was treated in the clinic, he still kept his calm. He just sat down and looked into space. This confirms that he is not a cult member.”
Several hours after the demonstration, Dr Ladipo arrived to address the students. She described the incident as unfortunate, saying the culprits would be brought to book. The management, she said, was doing its best to strengthen security on the campus, noting that such occurrence was a one-off thing.
The management has set up a panel to look into the matter. The panel comprises four students, including SUG president. The panel will look into the immediate cause of the crisis, with a view to stopping the harassment of students.
The Rector prayed for peace in the school, urging God to punish troublemakers.

FG can borrow to resolve ASUU strike –VC

FG can borrow to resolve ASUU strike –VC

Vice-Chancellor, Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, Kwara State, Prof. Sulyman Abdulkareem
The Vice-Chancellor, Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, Kwara State, Prof. Sulyman Abdulkareem, in this interview with SUCCESS NWOGU, speaks on the nation’s university system, especially with regard to the ongoing strike embarked upon by lecturers in public universities
How has the journey been at the Al-Hikmah University?
I am grateful to God that things are working out well in the university. Just last Saturday, we had our third convocation. We graduated 506 students and 14 of them had First Class, while 124 of them obtained Second Class Upper Division. From a population of about 70 students at inception in 2005/2006 academic session, the school has grown to 3,420 students currently.
The first convocation we had was two years ago and it was a combination of three sets where we graduated 454 students.
Last year, we graduated only one set and this third set. I thank God because the ongoing strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities would have affected it.
What’s the effect of the strike on private universities?
I have observed that any time any  school is on strike, whether it is that of ASUU or any other strike, students normally do not go home. They visit their friends in other institutions.
So, there is no way any VC can feel safe when there is strike going on because those students that will not go home will come to  other universities to either influence behaviour or at least, look for shelter.  That is why, every time there is strike, vice-chancellors are concerned about happenings in their schools.
Again,  I was worried when I read in the newspapers that the National Association of Nigerian  Students suggested that private universities should be disturbed so that the Federal Government would be more concerned about the ongoing ASUU strike.
How did you receive NANS threat?
It was not a delight, of course.  I can appreciate their concern, but I feel that they should realise that private universities are actually paying already for continuity of non-strike on campuses.
That is why private university owners cannot afford to renege or delay negotiation with their staff because they do not  have subvention or contributions from federal or state government.
What is your take on the prolonged strike and the teachers’ demand?
The Federal Government should look for ways to prevent strike at all costs. I realised that we may be saying that we do not have limitless funds to run universities; but we do know the number of universities we have. My prayer is that they will take it as a responsibility to make sure that the main actors on campus, in this case, the lecturers, must be satisfied such that there will be no recurrence of strike for good.
The striking teachers are talking about things needed to give quality education to their students.
As a parent, I want the Federal Government to do everything possible to meet ASUU’s demand because if they are asking for something beyond reasonable, I can understand the Federal Government not providing them.
But if they are asking that provisions be such on the campuses that the very best of education is given to our students, I feel the Federal Government should please meet these demands. The striking teachers are saying they want to meet with the global expectations and I believe that should also be of concern to the Federal Government.
Are you then justifying the strike?
These are the demands agreed upon as far back as 2009, according to ASUU. I do not think that it should drag on indefinitely. The Federal Government should look for ways of meeting these demands, even if it means taking a loan.  They have taken loans to do some laudable programmes in the past. If they do it for the education sector and our youth, I do not think it is too much a sacrifice.  My prayer is that God gives the Federal Government the wisdom and wherewithal to meet these demands so that university education can move on.
If FG meets about 70 per cent of their demands, would you advise ASUU members to resume work while negotiations for the remaining demands continue?
I believe that if the FG meets 70 or 80 per cent of their demands, Nigerians will prevail on ASUU members to go back to work.  Right now, the authorities have only met 30 per cent of their demands. This is far from the demands. My prayer is that the leadership of this country and the supervising minister of education will sit down and look for ways of coming up with higher provisions to meet the ASUU demands.

Balotelli handed three-match ban

Balotelli handed three-match ban

Mario Balotelli
Milan striker Mario Balotelli has been banned for three matches after being sent off against Napoli on Sunday.
The 23-year-old was booked in the 57th minute before being shown a second yellow card for dissent after the final whistle of his side’s 2-1 defeat at San Siro.
Being dismissed for two bookable offences carries a mandatory one-match suspension, but the Italian league has opted to extend Balotelli’s punishment for “directing insulting and intimidating expressions to the referee at the time of the sending-off”, it confirmed in a statement.
Balotelli had a typically eventful game against Rafael Benitez’s side, as he missed the first penalty of his career and hit the bar before scoring a sublime injury-time consolation and getting sent off.
The Italy international, who has scored three goals in four Serie A games this season, will now miss Milan’s fixtures against Bologna, Sampdoria and champions Juventus.

Arsenal in profit despite trophyless season

Arsenal in profit despite trophyless season

The sale of striker Robin van Persie to Manchester United helped Arsenal remain in profit in 2012-13, a season when the English Premier League club again failed to win a trophy.
Van Persie’s departure to the eventual champions fuelled anger among Arsenal fans at the way the club, majority owned by American Stan Kroenke, was being run.
However, the London team finished fourth in the league to clinch a spot in the lucrative Champions League for a 16th successive season. A strong start to the current season and the signing of German Mesut Ozil have further lifted the mood.
Profit before tax was £6.7m ($10.72m) in the year to the end of May, down from 36.6 million a year earlier.
Arsenal said it made a £47m profit on the sale of Van Persie and Alex Song, the midfielder who moved to Barcelona. However, the club said it had invested £58.7m on buying new players and extending contracts.
Since the figures were compiled, Arsenal have spent an additional £42.5m on buying German playmaker Ozil from Real Madrid. They currently lead the Premier League as they seek a first major trophy since winning the FA Cup in 2005.

Rooney demands more from teammates

Rooney demands more from teammates

Wayne Rooney
Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has underlined the need for his side to make defensive improvements after Sunday’s derby defeat.
David Moyes’ team were trounced 4-1 by rivals Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, with Rooney scoring a late consolation after a Sergio Aguero double and strikes from Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri had put the game beyond doubt.
The result marked United’s heaviest away defeat to City since 2004, and Rooney has acknowledged that his side’s performance was far from acceptable.
“It is not good enough,” Rooney told MUTV. “We know we have to improve and stop giving these sloppy goals away.
“It is not nice to lose to City. It was a bad result and we are all extremely disappointed.”
Rooney’s free-kick was his fourth goal in three games and made him the all-time leading scorer in Manchester derby matches with 11 goals.
But the England international was keen to focus solely on Wednesday’s League Cup clash with Liverpool, rather than personal milestones.
“It is nice to score but it means nothing,” he added. “The most important thing today was the points and we have come away with none.
“Thankfully we have another massive game against Liverpool. It is the ideal game for us. Any game against Liverpool, whether it is a friendly, Capital One Cup or Premier League, is massive.
“We have to try and get the victory so we can put this defeat to the back of our minds.”

Osun poll: Crisis threatening PDP’s chances

Osun poll: Crisis threatening PDP’s chances

PDP NAtional Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur
As the Osun State governorship election draws near, the crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party may ruin its chances, writes FEMI MAKINDE
The Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State is in a precarious situation. This situation cannot be divorced from the crisis rocking the party’s National Headquarters in Abuja. Perhaps more than every other state, the state chapter of the party is in dire straits as the crisis appears set to decimate what is left of the goodwill it once enjoyed. Pundits argue that unless the crisis is quickly resolved, the state chapter of the party will remain in the opposition longer than it ever envisaged. The situation is made worse by the fact that the 2014 governorship election is only a few months away. The party cannot afford to go into the election with its house in disarray. If, however, the party is able to find a solution to its myriad of problems, it could spring a surprise.
Former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, who is the national secretary of the Abubakar Baraje-led PDP, leads one faction of the party while the other faction has remained loyal to the Alhaji Bamanga Tukur.
Barely 24 hours after the split in PDP, the Osun State chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Ganiyu Olaoluwa, issued a statement dissociating the state chapter  from Oyinlola while pledging loyalty to the Tukur-led PDP and President Goodluck Jonathan.
Some days later, the state PDP Elders’ Committee issued a communiqué in which they also dissociated themselves from the Baraje faction.
A member of the Board of Trustees of the PDP, Alhaji Shuaibu Oyedokun, who is also the state chairman of the PDP Elders Committee, said betrayal was not new in politics. He observed that those who did it in the past did not end their political careers well.
The elders committee later declared its support for Jonathan and warned members of the party against attending any meeting called by Oyinlola or any leader of the new PDP.
Despite the warning, thousands of PDP members trooped to Odo Otin Grammar School, Okuku in Oyinlola’s hometown to attend a meeting with the ex-governor.
Oyinlola, who is good in the art of story-telling, enthralled his teeming supporters with what caused the crisis between him and Tukur and how his relationship with Gen. Ibrahim Babangida was misconstrued by Jonathan.
The former governor appeared overwhelmed by the show of solidarity by thousands of his supporters who came out to attend the rally despite earlier threats.
He said the PDP leaders in the state would scuttle the party’s chances of winning the 2014 governorship poll by sidelining him.
Oyinlola said, “I am happy that despite the warning that you should no longer associate with me, you still came out in large numbers to honour me. God will honour you all. But let me tell you all, without my support, it will be impossible for the PDP to win the governorship election in Osun State. “They can only go round to campaign with what they intend to do but if I follow them, I will tell the people what I have done in the state.”
When probed further if he was likely to join the progressives; the ex-governor said he would move elsewhere if he was no longer wanted within the PDP.
Many suggest that by this statement, Oyinlola was giving a hint of a possibility of defecting to the All Progressives Congress.
The Ganiyu Olaoluwa-led state chapter of PDP did not take kindly to the effrontery displayed by party members who openly identified with Oyinlola.
The immediate past chairman of the party, Alhaji Ademola Rasaq, and some ward chairmen of the party were suspended for attending the rally called by Oyinlola.
Three out of the four governorship aspirants of the party were also given a 24-hour ultimatum to either denounce the statement credited to Rasaq that they (aspirants) were in support of Oyinlola or be ready to face the consequences.
The governorship aspirants are: Alhaji Fatai Akinbade, Senator Akinlabi Olasunkanmi and Wole Oke.
But the suspension further exposed the disunity within the rank and file of the state chapter of the party.
While some who are loyal to the Tukur- led PDP hailed the suspension, those who are Oyinlola’s loyalists criticised the party chairman for taking the decision to suspend members of the party.
Chief Abiola Ogundokun who is also a member of the PDP Elders Committee, said Oyinlola’s action amounted to a betrayal of trust.
He said the ex-governor did not carry anybody along when he dumped the PDP and teamed up with rebel governors to form the “so-called new PDP.”
In response to the ultimatum given to them by the state party chairman, the three governorship aspirants dismissed the chairman’s threat saying it was unthinkable for the chairman to give them an ultimatum to denounce what they did not say.
They urged the party leadership to resolve the crisis saying the party needed to be united before going to the polls. The chairman has yet to make further comments after the expiration of the one-week ultimatum.
Instead, he set up a panel headed by Mr. Dosu Oladipo to investigate those who were identified to have attended the meeting with Oyinlola in Okuku.
One of Oyinlola’s loyalists; Chief Dapo Ayodele, who is seeking to represent Osun Central Senatorial District at the Senate; verbally attacked the PDP chairman for suspending Oyinlola’s supporters.
He faulted the “unilateral decision of the chairman” to suspend the affected persons while stating that Oyinlola remained the leader of the party in the state.
Ayodele further noted that what should be the primary objective of the party was to find a way of settling the crisis rather than aggravating an already bad situation.
A former acting Chairman of the state chapter of the party, Chief Sunday Ojo-Williams, in an interview with our correspondent, appealed to all the warring factions within the PDP at the state and at the national level to unite for the party to win in Osun State in next year’s governorship election.
He said the party needed Oyinlola and all of its members, as well as those who were non-members to support it in order to ensure that it emerges victorious in the forthcoming election.
Ojo-Williams said since election was a game of numbers, the PDP would not want to lose Oyinlola’s vote and the votes of other aggrieved members of the party.
Although Jonathan has his loyalists who would be ready to work for the PDP during the governorship as well as the 2015 presidential elections, it is almost certain that some of the aggrieved PDP leaders will work against it except its internal wrangling is quickly resolved.
Erelu Olusola Obada was recently removed as the Minister of State for Defence and her sacking was traced to her association with former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Oyinlola who obviously do not belong to Jonathan’s camp.
Many believe that even if she, as a person, does not work against the party’s interests, she may not go out of her way to work towards its success in 2014; unless an amicable solution is found to the problems facing the party.
The Chairman of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, Olajide Adeniji, who is an avowed loyalist of President Jonathan, is one of those who will stake all that they have to ensure victory for the party but such efforts may come under threat by aggrieved party members.
There are those belonging to the school of thought that Adeniji, is a joker Jonathan may use if the stigma on a preferred aspirant refuses to go.
However, coming from Osun Central Senatorial District which has produced Chief Bisi Akande and Oyinlola, it may be difficult for him to convince some voters.
Senator Iyiola Omisore, who is the only governorship aspirant who escaped the threat of sanctions by the leadership of the state PDP, is also obviously in Jonathan’s camp.
His supporters believe that he is tough and has what it takes to give the incumbent governor a serious challenge. Those in this school of thought argue that they both enjoy a large following in Osun East Senatorial District where they both come from.
He too may become a victim of the antics of aggrieved members of the PDP who have an axe to grind with him and the party if he eventually picks the ticket to contest the 2014 governorship election.
Without a doubt, the crisis which has polarised the party at the national and state levels will lead to serious consequences for the party if not quickly resolved.
This is even more so in the case of Osun State, given the current level of acceptance the administration of Governor Rauf Aregbesola of the APC enjoys.
The PDP, which is the leading opposition party in the state, may be in for a long wait to wrest power from the APC unless and until it puts its house in order.

Resolving ASUU strike

Resolving ASUU strike

Would there have been any or much difference if our public university lecturers had not embarked on any mass action and the doors of the classrooms are left open and schools operation?
I stand to be convinced that the costs of the strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, by any standard, outweigh the benefits if there is little or no visible difference between the period before and during the strike action. If we had no record of excellent achievements that could translate to appreciable socio-economic transformation or technological advancement, it only means our schools are more or less mere platforms for social gatherings where everyone learns what he finds useful to him/her e.g learning to speak English and picking one social vice or the other.
It may be difficult to admit the reality of the fact that we have a grossly dysfunctional educational system where the quality of teachers is incapable of ensuring their products are impactful on the society in most strata of our developmental challenges which is why we have PhD holders being taken to the cleaners by many uneducated persons amongst us.
If you ask what ASUU is fighting for, you will be amazed at how absurd they could be when critically appraised relative to what is needed for functional educational system and if you also ask why the government is not meeting its requests, you will be amazed that the government is paying more attention to frivolity and issues of less priority importance.
What can be deduced from the whole scenario is that the educational system in Nigeria has yet to have exceptionally useful impact on the majority of the country’s population because the teachers are Nigerians and those who form the government are also Nigerians, who will claim to have been educated when asked.

ASUU remains adamant, says strike not politically motivated

ASUU remains adamant, says strike not politically motivated

Contrary to popular views that the ongoing ASUU strike was motivated politically, the Academic body(ASUU) has said otherwise, denying that it’s ongoing protest has any political link.
The Calabar Zonal Coordinator of the Union, Dr. Charles Ononuju, debunked this view in a news conference on Tuesday in Umuahia.
“We wish to emphasise strongly that our struggle has no political undertone as being falsely and mischievously propagated, those saying otherwise are being economical with the truth.
“No amount of blackmail will make the union jettison our resolve to get the government implement the 2009 agreement and MoU of January 24, 2012,” he said.
He buttressed that the strike was aimed at transforming the University sector for the good of Nigerian students.
Restating the union’s commitment to ensure that change sets into the nation’s university, he said the union had rejected the offer of N130 billion made to the Pro-Chancellors and Vice Chancellors of universities by the Federal Government.
He said the way and manner money is been release by the Federal Government was contrary to the 2009 agreement as well as the 2012 Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Federal government and ASUU.
Mr. Ononuju urged the Federal Government to honour the 2009 agreement it freely entered into with the union, adding that the union was not making fresh demands.
At the briefing were the chairman of ASUU in MOUAU, Uzochukwu Onyebinama, and James Okpiliya of the University of Calabar.
Other members present at the news conference were Nwachukwu Anyim of the University of Uyo and Nsing Ogar of the Cross River State University of Technology.

The collection which features pieces from gowns and casual shirts to short dresses and shorts, was created for the trendy AfroMod woman. Nyornu, which means woman in the Ewe dialect (a Ghanaian language), is aimed at capturing and celebrating the very essence of womanhood.
The designer, Ami Yomkepe, had a lot to say on the collection’s make-up and talks about each chic, casual and gown sub section of the collection. According to her, she is looking at inspiring the AfroMod woman through this collection. She aims to do this through values of class, elegance and virtue and she hopes this transcends beyond just the clothes to the inherent values of every woman who is touched by ‘Nyornu’.
Carrying out her duties, Ghanaian songstress Adina Thembi Ndamse who was unveiled as the AfroMods Trends ambassador, plays the model in the photo shoot.

Ideye ends goals drought in Ukraine

Nigeria international Brown Ideye scored his first league goal of the 10-week-old Ukraine Premier league on Sunday, MTNFootball.com reports.
Ideye scored the only goal of the game, which gave Dynamo Kiev the maximum three points against Karpaty.
The former Sochaux of France forward scored in the 84th minute, two minutes after he was thrown into the fray as a replacement for Sergiy Sydorchuk.
The big forward, who scored a brace in Nigeria 4-1 drubbing of Burkina Faso in a friendly, has scored two goals this season for Dynamo Kiev in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers.
He has played only four games in the league this season.
Compatriot Lukman Haruna was not listed for the Karpaty game.

ASUU insists NUC should be scrapped

ASUU insists NUC should be scrappedASUU insists NUC should be scrapped

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) yesterday reiterated its call for the scrapping or an overhaul of the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The union restated its stand in a statement by the Chairman of its University of Ibadan (UI) chapter, Dr. Olusegun Ajiboye.
ASUU urged the National Assembly to probe the activities of NUC, adding that the commission has failed to reposition the nation’s universities as shown by the NEEDS Assessment Report carried out by genuine academics.
The statement said this contradicted NUC’s accreditation exercises.
The union said the NUC accreditation exercises, which gave a “controversial” clean bill of health to most universities in the country, were the result of what it called a mago-mago (unethical) accreditation.
The union said in accountable climes, the NUC chief would have resigned, following the revelations in the NEEDS Assessment Report.
ASUU stressed that the ongoing strike was total.
The union said it could not be fooled again with “promissory notes” of the Federal Government, which has never worked.
The statement, titled: Where Okojie Got It Wrong, said NUC’s Executive Secretary, Prof Julius Okojie, cannot absolve himself of the rot in the university system because he has allegedly been regulating quantity instead of ensuring quality delivery.
Prof. Okojie, last Thursday, absolved the commission of any accreditation misdeed.
He said ASUU members were to blame for the development.
But Ajiboye described the statement credited to the NUC chief as “careless”.
He alleged that Prof Okojie was using his friends for the accreditation.
The university lecturer said the success of the 2011 elections could be attributed to the patriotic zeal and contributions of the ASUU leadership.
According to him, it was through the ASUU leadership that the election was freer than most of the past polls.
He said: “ASUU cannot be blamed for NUC’s mago-mago accreditations. Rather than blame the union, Prof Okojie should take full responsibility for all the deeds in the NUC, including the work and accreditations…
“Nigerians should be proud of ASUU in its efforts at repositioning public universities. One of these major efforts is the NEEDS Assessment document. This was a product of a rigorous academic exercise carried out by dependable and credible members of our union. Unlike the numerous faulty accreditation reports, which had given these universities a clean bill of health, the NEEDS Assessment Report stands out as a classical document of reference detailing the rot and decay in public universities in Nigeria.
ABU VC seeks divine
The Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Prof Abdullahi Mustapha, has urged intending pilgrims to this year’s Hajj to pray for Allah’s intervention in the ongoing feud between the Federal Government and members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
“I want to use this opportunity of Hajj to appeal to all Nigerians, especially those embarking on this highly spiritual mission to the holy land, to pray to the Almighty Allah for the country’s unity, sustainable peace and immediate resolution of the Federal Government-ASUU dispute,” Prof Mustapha said.
The vice chancellor, in a statement by his spokesman, Mallam Waziri Isa Gwantu, expressed concerns over the lingering dispute.
He said the face-off is threatening to ground the universities and the entire education sector.
The academic noted that the non-resolution of the dispute may affect Nigeria’s image in the perception of international education community.
Prof Mustapha said if the dispute was not resolved within the shortest time, to save the universities from further degeneration, the nation may witness another unfortunate phase of mass exodus of the few intellectuals in the system to other countries in search of alternatives.

Every manager has bad results. I’m no different." - David Moyes of Man Utd

The Scot says he has told his players he expects a much better performance with a visit from Liverpool in the Capital One Cup up next for the stuttering champions
Manchester United manager David Moyes says he is expecting a reaction from his players after losing 4-1 to neighbours City in the derby.

The Premier League champions slumped to their second defeat of the season at the Etihad Stadium and Moyes revealed he had informed his team of just how disappointed he was by their performance.

"I’ve made them aware of that," he told reporters. "But if there is ever was a group of players I’d expect that from it would be a group of Manchester United players.

"I think the way they have been brought up, the way they have been bred with the manager previously, they react, that’s what they do, and that’s what we’ll do here.

"We’ll make sure we react. Every manager has bad results. I’m no different."

Brendan Rodgers looks to Luis Suárez after Southampton expose weaknesses

It is never a good sign when the one positive a manager can find is sitting in a corporate box. Brendan Rodgers spoke with genuine relief at the end of Luis Suárez's 10-match suspension but, while the expiry date was perfectly timed, the topic was merely a diversion against Southampton. Second-best to Mauricio Pochettino's intelligent side throughout, Liverpool's part in their downfall could not be disguised.
"A bad day at the office," was the Liverpool manager's verdict and in fairness he has not overseen one since losing at Southampton in March. Rodgers had also injected reality into the optimism generated during Liverpool's unbeaten start, accepting his team rose to the top without a convincing 90-minute display.
His programme notes captured perfectly the balance between Liverpool's ingrained ambition and the leap required after four seasons outside the Champions League. The team-sheet he compiled, however, lacked any such finesse. The bad day commenced in his office.Southampton's Dejan Lovren, bottom right, scores
Rodgers' decision to start with four centre-halves dominated the post-match scrutiny on Liverpool, Suárez apart, and the manager was steadfast in his own defence. "It is what we had available," he argued, given injury to Glen Johnson, Martin Kelly's lack of match fitness and a knee problem for José Enrique that did not stop the Spaniard's introduction shortly after Dejan Lovren headed Southampton into a deserved lead.
The selection accommodated all the experienced voices and recent £16m signing Mamadou Sakho in a left-back role he recently stated was not for him. More importantly, and inevitably, it disrupted Liverpool's cohesion, penetration from full-back and distribution. Southampton accepted the initiative gratefully.
"It raised a couple of eyebrows," said Adam Lallana of Liverpool's line-up. "But we concentrated more on our game and forced our game-plan on them well. They are a team that likes to play out from the back, like us, so we played a high-pressing game to win the ball back in areas where we could affect the game. They had to play it long and that's what we wanted them to do. Our back four were brilliant. They were like rocks. We thoroughly deserved to win and had the chances to make it two or three-nil in the second half.
"We've had a tough start to the season. Teams like West Ham and Norwich are not easy teams to play against.
"We felt the way Liverpool played we could maybe capitalise on their style and it would suit us a little bit better. We found we did that, we got the ball back in good areas and created chances."
Victory tasted "sweet" for Lallana, the Everton-supporting Southampton captain, one of a number of vibrant performers in black. Pochettino's team were composed and disciplined from the off, from Artur Boruc in goal, Luke Shaw and Nathaniel Clyne demonstrating the value of incisive full-backs, Lovren and José Fonte in the heart of defence and Victor Wanyama in central midfield. They improved to a swagger on the counter-attack after the interval, encouraged by Liverpool's carelessness.
Defensive uncertainty in the home ranks proved contagious. The goalkeeper, Simon Mignolet, spread panic throughout Anfield whenever he tried to play his way out of trouble. "I play that style with the national team as well and I am very confident with doing that," he insisted. "It is not a problem." A long, awkward silence followed that answer.
Steven Gerrard, Lucas Leiva and Daniel Sturridge, all instrumental in the unbeaten opening, all toiled and the winning goal encapsulated the Liverpool display. Kolo Touré and Martin Skrtel conspired to concede a throw-in, then a corner, and Lovren headed Lallana's delivery beyond Mignolet despite the presence of the four centre-halves. "Criminal," said Rodgers. Liverpool finished with a totally different defensive formation and with Daniel Agger's prospects of facing Manchester United in the Capital One Cup reduced after aggravating a rib injury. Rodgers has abundant options in that department but, with Philippe Coutinho injured, Suárez kicking his heels one last time in the stands and Iago Aspas struggling badly, the lack of inspirationin the final third also told.
On the summer transfer policy Rodgers said: "From the club's perspective we felt like we needed another centre-back and then there was another younger one who became available [Tiago Ilori]. And that was something that the club wanted to do and protect that position for a number of years. I think Sakho is a strong aggressive player who will only get better. I thought he did very well. We were on the look-out for a No10 but we were unable to get one. But that's something we can't worry about now. We've got one of the world's leading strikers coming back into the team and that will give us a lift."

Mesut Özil shines with key display in Arsenal's defeat of Stoke City

It was as this game entered its final 10 minutes that the Arsenal fans were able to truly show their appreciation for Mesut Özil. They arrived excited to see the German make his home debut, and after a display lit up by a key role in all three goals their side scored against a willing but limited Stoke City team, he received a standing ovation upon being substituted. On this evidence, the £42.5m man is sure to receive much more acclaim in these parts as an increasingly positive season for the club goes on.
Özil was not at his sparkling best, and it could be argued he was not even the most impressive player on the pitch given the performances in midfield of Mathieu Flamini and Aaron Ramsey, with the Welshman continuing his remarkable start to the season with a seventh goal in all competitions. Yet the record signing caught the eye with a silky, penetrative and ultimately decisive showing.
It was rather ironic given the tetchy history between Arsenal and Stoke, based on a supposed clash between the beautiful and brutal, that the home team should triumph through a trio of set pieces. Yet here was proof of the difference Özil can make to a side and why Real Madrid's decision to let the 24-year-old depart last summer is so baffling.
He has provided 72 assists across the past five seasons, more than any other player in Europe's top five divisions, and in only three appearances for his new club already has a further three to his name, four if you include the free-kick that Asmir Begovic parried into the path of Ramsey, allowing him to open the scoring here after only five minutes. That was followed by a corner from which Per Mertesacker put Arsenal back into the lead following Geoff Cameron's well-taken equaliser and a second-half free-kick that Bacary Sagna converted to put the seal on a victory that moved Arsenal back to top spot.
Mesut Ozil
Mesut Ozil Photograph: Sang Tan/AP "When you look at Özil's numbers, the assists are not a coincidence – it is a reality of his game," said Arsène Wenger, Arsenal's manager. "When you play against Stoke you don't expect to score three goals from set pieces but it shows how important his delivery is, and I believe once he has completely integrated you will see even more. He has shown today that he is a great player."
More than anything Özil was the difference for an Arsenal side that deserved to win but hardly took the breath away. Disrupted by an abdominal injury to Theo Walcott, which led to the winger being replaced by Serge Gnabry moments before kick-off, the home side dominated large periods of the game and attacked with fluidity, yet they created few chances in open play, with Olivier Giroud rarely looking likely to add to his five goals this season.
Ramsey, on the other hand, cannot stop scoring. He proved to be the right man in the right place after the normally excellent Begovic made a poor attempt of clearing Özil's low free-kick from just outside the area, sidefooting the ball past the goalkeeper from close range.
That should have been the cue for an Arsenal onslaught but Stoke's disciplined shape and relentless pressing reduced the home side to eye-of-the-needle through-passes and shots from long range. The visitors, stationed deep in their own half, looked unlikely to score but they did just that on 26 minutes when Marko Arnautovic, on his first start for Stoke, hit an upright with a volley following Steven Nzonzi's cross to the far post before seeing the impressive Cameron convert the rebound to secure his first goal for Mark Hughes's side.
Arsenal stepped up the pace of their play and retook the lead nine minutes from half-time when, with minimal movement, Mertesacker found himself with enough room to glance Özil's right-sided corner into the far corner of the net.
It was from a relatively straightforward header that Sagna also scored on 72 minutes, this time from a left-sided Özil delivery, leaving Hughes in an unsurprisingly frustrated state with the manner of his team's defending, particularly after an improved second-half display had suggested they could leave with a point.
"We're disappointed to have conceded three goals from set pieces – that doesn't normally happen," said the Stoke manager. "We showed courage to get back on level terms and in the second half played with a lot of control and possession. But the third goal took the wind out of our sails and came at a poor time."
Eight minutes after Sagna's goal, Özil received his standing ovation, with those on their feet then roaring Mikel Arteta as he came on to make his first appearance of the season following recovery from a thigh injury. Joy all round, then, and the sense that a season that began amid such rancour is shaping up rather well for Wenger and his men.

Kenyan forces have located militants in shopping mall, says president

Kenyan forces have located militants in shopping mall, says president

• Kenyatta says forces have chance to 'neutralise terrorists'
• Unknown number of hostages are held in shopping centre
• At least 59 people have been killed including three Britons
Link to video: Nairobi shopping centre attack: injured customers escape gunmen
Kenya's president has said security forces confronting militants in a Nairobi shopping mall have located the attackers in one part of the building and now have "as good a chance to successfully neutralise the terrorists as we can hope for".
As the standoff with gunmen who killed at least 59 people entered a second day and explosions and gunfire were heard, Uhuru Kenyatta said Kenya would seek to conclusively establish who was responsible for the attack and "swiftly and indeed painfully" punish the masterminds.
The Somali Islamist group al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack on the Kenyan capital's Westgate mall, which is frequented by westerners as well as Kenyans. Several foreigners, including at least three Britons, two French women, a Canadian diplomat and the Ghanaian poet Kofi Awoonor were among the dead.

Photograph: Kabir Dhanji/EPA Kenya's Red Cross said in a statement citing police that 49 people had been reported missing. Officials did not make an explicit link but that number could form the basis of the number of people held hostage. "The priority is to save as many lives as possible," said the interior minister, Joseph Lenku, reassuring the families of the hostages.
Kenyatta, facing his first major security challenge since his election in March, said the dead included his nephew and his nephew's fiancee – "young lovely people I personally knew and loved".
The attack began when heavily armed militants pulled up in several cars and shot their way into the most upmarket shopping centre in Nairobi, ordering Muslims out if they could prove their religion by reciting a prayer or answering a question on Islam. They started killing those who failed the test.

Over the next several hours, pockets of people poured out of the mall as undercover police moved in. Some of the wounded were being transported in shopping trolleys.
The dead included children, and the wounded ranged in age from two to 78. Many victims were at a cooking competition when assailants stormed in with automatic rifles, witnesses said. Blood lay in pools in the mall. Shop windows were shattered.
Following similar methods to the 2008 terror attack in Mumbai, the assailants barricaded themselves in different shops in the multistorey centre. One wounded gunman was arrested, but later died in hospital.

Photograph: Simon Maina/AFP/Getty Images As shoppers inside the mall made their way to safety, witness accounts of the attack began to emerge. The gunmen carried AK-47s and wore vests with hand grenades on them, said Manish Turohit, 18, who hid in a parking garage for two hours.
"They just came in and threw a grenade. We were running and they opened fire. They were shouting and firing," he said after marching out of the mall in a line of 15 people who all held their hands in the air.
Frank Mugungu, an off-duty army sergeant major, said he saw four male attackers and one female attacker. "One was Somali. The others were black," he said.
"We started by hearing gunshots downstairs and outside. Later we heard them come inside. We took cover. Then we saw two gunmen wearing black turbans. I saw them shoot," said Patrick Kuria, an employee at Artcaffe, a restaurant with shady outdoor seating.
Map of Kenya showing Nairobi The attack took place in the Westgate shopping centre in Nairobi. Photograph: Observer Hannah Chisholm, a Briton visiting Nairobi, told the BBC she and dozens of others barricaded themselves into a large storeroom. "We kept running to different places but the shots were getting louder so we barricaded ourselves along with about 60 others into a large storeroom," she said. "There were children with us as well as someone who had been shot. The gunfire was loud and we were scared but at that point we thought the gunmen were thieves so we assumed they wouldn't try to reach the storeroom."
Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility via a Twitter account. The spokesperson claimed the atrocity was in response to the presence of Kenyan troops in Somalia: "The attack at #WestgateMall is just a very tiny fraction of what Muslims in Somalia experience at the hands of Kenyan invaders," the account stated. "For long we have waged war against the Kenyans in our land, now it's time to shift the battleground and take the war to their land." It continued by saying that the Kenyan government was "pleading with our mujahideen inside the mall for negotiations. There will be no negotiations whatsoever."

Since then Kenyan troops have succeeded in expelling the jihadists from the southern Somali port city of Kismayo and installing a former warlord friendly to the government in Nairobi.
The mall's ownership is Israeli, and security experts have long said the structure would make an attractive terrorist target.
Hospitals in Nairobi were overwhelmed by the number of wounded being brought in following the attack. However, officials said that Kenyans turned out in droves to donate blood and long queues had formed with further volunteers.

Photograph: Thomas Mukoya/Reuters Kenyan authorities said they have thwarted other large-scale attacks targeting public spaces, including, in September 2012, the disruption of a major terrorist attack in its final stages of planning. They arrested two people with explosive devices and a cache of weapons and ammunition.
The anti-terror police unit boss Boniface Mwaniki said vests found were similar to those used in attacks that killed 76 people in Uganda who gathered to watch the soccer World Cup finals on TV in July 2010. Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for those bombings, saying the attack was in retaliation for Uganda's participation in the African Union's peacekeeping mission in Somalia.
