3 French terrorists and 4 hostages killed in twin hostage standoffs in Paris

Brothers Cherif (inset top left) and Said Kouachi (inset bottom left), who attacked & killed 12 people at Charlie Hebdo on Wednesday Jan. 7th have been killed by French police in a bloody standoff.

A third guy, Amedy Coulibaly (inset right), who was working with the brothers and killed a female police officer, was also killed by French police. Amedy is reported to have killed four people at the kosher grocery store (right) where he had been hiding with his girlfriend who was not caught. Full story after the cut...

From UK Daily Mail
Amedy Coulibay was shot dead after taking at least six hostages at a grocery store in east Paris. He is believed to be have been working with his girlfriend Hayat Boumeddiene (right) who was said to be 'armed and dangerous'
Three jihadists were dead tonight after special forces brought an end to more than two days of slaughter which have left at least 17 dead and spread terror across France.
Said and Cherif Kouachi, the brothers who had assassinated 12 people at satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, died in a blaze of gunfire at a printworks near Paris where they had been holed up with one hostage, who survived.
Moments later, dozens of commandos stormed a Jewish grocery 25 miles away in east Paris where accomplice Amdey Coulibay was threatening to kill a number of people including women and children.
The 32-year-old, responsible for the death of a woman police officer on Thursday, was also ‘neutralised’ in the assault. Tragically, four hostages were also killed while another five were badly wounded.
There were reports tonight that another gunman had escaped the scene
Coulibay is thought to have been working with his 'armed and dangerous' girlfriend Hayat Boumeddiene, whose whereabouts is unknown.
Gunfire and explosions had been heard at the first hostage siege after police had surrounded the gunmen at an industrial estate 25 miles from Paris.
The siege reached a bloody climax when the brothers reportedly 'came out firing' after a nine-hour stand-off.
They had earlier told police negotiators: 'We are ready to die as martyrs'.
At around 4.30pm, people living nearby reported hearing three or four loud explosions followed by several gunshots.
More explosions followed and smoke could be seen rising from the building. Others reported seeing ambulances race to the scene.
A short time later three French special forces officers could be seen on the roof of the building.
Then, at around 5.30 pm, three large helicopters arrived at the scene and landed on the roof. The hostage was named as Michel Catalano.
His family were gathered at their detached home in the nearby village of Othis as the siege came to a dramatic end in Dammartin-en-Goele.
Police were last night stationed outside the property. One officer told MailOnline: 'The family are all here. They have come to support Mrs Catalano. They are all gathered together but they are too upset to speak.'
Atlantis Farina, 17, who lives close to the scene was returning from high school shortly after 4pm when he heard explosions.
'The ground here started shaking, that is what shocked me most,' he said. 'Then there was lots of what sounded like gunfire, it sounded like the suspects were firing back at the police.
'There was smoke too - like they had thrown a grenade. I am so glad it is over, it bought panic to the area. My mum was very worried, and I was quite scared too.'
Philippe Lapotre, 63, was at his home across a field from the factory when he heard the explosions followed by gun fire and came out to see.
'My friends and family have been calling me all day to see if I was ok,' he said. 'When I came out, three huge Puma helicopters came over.'
Carole and Thierry Charpentier were at home when the siege ended. 'We have been at home, just watching the television all day,' said Mrs Charpentier.
'We are so very relieved it is over, and are glad the police have got the suspects and the hostage is free.

Buhari represents darkness while GEJ represents light - FFK

Spokesperson of the PDP presidential campaign organisation Femi Fani-Kayode has described APC's presidential flag bearer as a rep of darkness while President Jonathan represents light. According to him, General Buhari's records are shameful and disastrous. FFK said this while addressing newsmen at the PDP campaign headquarters in Abuja today January 7th
“We wish to inform you that it is our intention to run a clean campaign that is based on facts, figures and issues. We shall not indulge in the type of cheap propaganda, mud-slinging and deceit that the APC and their Presidential candidate have been indulging in over the last few weeks and months but it is our full intention to expose General Muhammadu Buhari for what he really is, what he stands for and the great danger that his candidacy portends for the unity of the Nigerian state and the peace and well-being of the Nigerian people.
More importantly, we shall let the world know about the sterling performance of our candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan, over the last four years and we shall make a strong case and appeal to the Nigerian people to grant him the privilege and opportunity to serve a second term. We believe that we have reached a crossroads in our nation’s history and that the forthcoming Presidential Election is a battle for the very soul and destiny of Nigeria. We believe that it is a struggle between light and darkness. We believe that General Buhari represents the darkness and that President Jonathan represents the light. We believe that General Buhari represents a return to an ugly past which is best forgotten while President Jonathan represents our hope for a greater and better future. We believe that the APC, on which platform General Buhari is contesting the presidential election, represents everything that is unholy and unwholesome in our society and that the PDP represents all that is decent and good. “We believe that the much-vaunted ‘change’ campaign of General Buhari represents nothing but a change from good to evil. If you want a positive change, you cannot expect to get it from a man like General Buhari whose democratic credentials are questionable and whose record in public office is shameful and disastrous. Most people do not remember the atrocities that he committed when he was in power and it is our intention to document them and remind the Nigerian people about them.
Most people have chosen to ignore the number of things that General Buhari has said and the number of things that he has done over the last few months and years that have brought carnage, division and strife in our society and that prove that he is not the sort of person that can be trusted with power. It is our intention to bring those things to the attention of the Nigerian people so that they can make an informed choice. “We do not believe that Nigeria ought to be run by a man that is not capable of tolerating dissent or by a political party like the APC that has no sense of remorse, restraint or decency and that is not capable of accepting a plurality of views. We believe that President Goodluck Jonathan has earned the right for a second term and, in the next few weeks, we shall make a humble appeal to the Nigerian people to vote for him massively in the February 14 Presidential Election. By the grace and power of God, we shall prevail.” he said

IBB says his government was filled with saints and angels

Former Military Head of state, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida described members of his administration as saints and angels compared to those in power today. IBB made this remark during an interview with EFCC's internal correspondence "Zero Tolerance"
"Let me tell you something, maybe you have a hand in it. I have been the most investigated President Nigeria has ever had. By now, somebody should have come forward to say here it is. Every government that came after me investigated me because of that perception as they wanted to retrieve the billions I stole. Well, we had different approaches. I think my government was able to identify corruption-prone areas and checked them. If you remember in this country, there were things they call essential commodities. These are also sources of corruption. You go and buy Omo or food or whatever it is and we got government to take its hands off such activities. Let people use their own brains, hands and labour, nobody has to do it for them. So we did but I am proud to say that was much more effective. I don’t have the facts but if what I read in the newspapers is currently what is happening then I think we were angels” he said
IBB says the perception that his government institutionalized corruption is incorrect, arguing that with the little his administration was making from oil they could do what they did but with the much the present administration is making from oil, much is still left to be desired
"Yeah, I know. Maybe I have to accept that but anybody with a sense of fairness has no option but to call us saints. I give you an example, in a year I was making less than $7billion in oil revenue. In the same period, there are governments that are making $200billion to $300billion. With $7billion, I did the little I could achieve. With $200billion, there is still a lot to be achieved.”he said
On the $12.4billion oil windfall from the 1991 Gulf War which many believed was stolen by his government, Babangida insisted the money was not stolen.
“First of all, that war lasted three months, about ninety something days. It didn’t last up to a year. So get the facts straight. Secondly, the oil price at that time was below $18 per barrel. So, there is no way you could make $12.4billion in three months. We could not have made that amount of money but Pius Okigbo knew what he was doing. He had brains and he said between 1986 or 1988 to 1994, monies accrued to the Federal Government at that time was about that money you are calling windfall. He said so. It is there in his book. Then the other thing he said, the monies could have gone into generative investment. I am not an economist but I have an understanding of what this is. Our argument then was if you have the money, why keep it and be looking at it when you have a lot of things that will benefit the ordinary man. So that money was not stolen. It is what you see now in the country. Thank God most of the infrastructure we put in place are what you are using today and proudly so.”
Gen Babangida says the gains from the oil boom was used in the development of infrastructures such as the FCT Abuja and the third mainland bridge in Lagos amongst others
“Abuja for example, I built Abuja. Today, we have a brand new capital. We used that money. I gave you a Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos. You cannot build it now for all the money Nigeria is making. And what did it cost me? N500million, N600million, N700million. For the first time, a dual carriage way was seen in the Northern part of the country between Kaduna and Kano and then linked it up from Abuja. You cannot afford to do it now; you cannot even afford to touch it because there are a lot of competing needs.”he said
IBB who announced the annulment of the June 12election in which business mogul Late Chief Moshood Abiola was adjudged the winner, accepted that the election was a credible election
"Yes, it (June 12) is a day in the history of Nigeria and the day the most credible election was held. We gave you a lot of reasons but I understood the passion. At that time, everybody was fed up. The sentiment was:  just pack your things and go. Our thought process is very limited. First of all, on June 23, 1993, I was on the air and I told Nigerians why we had to do what we did but I was sensible enough to know that whatever I said nobody was interested. So, the important thing is get out.”he said
Speaking about his investments, Babangida said he is a major shareholder in a bank but failed to mention the name of the bank or the value of his shares in the bank.

On how he built his Hilltop Mansion in Minna, Babangida said:
“I cannot estimate because it has appreciated. I know what my friends spent. No, my friends contributed. They were friends before we came into government and friends while I was in government. I started building it in 1991, took two to three years so that by the time I finished, I would have a house to sleep in.”

If you cannot lie, get out of politics- Niger state governor

Governor of Niger state, Aliyu Babangida says that one has to tell lies to survive in the political scene of today, adding that there is no morality in politics. He says if anyone wants to pursue morality, they should go and become Imams or Pastors. The Governor stated this while inaugurating the PDP guber campaign committee in Minna the state capital yesterday January 5th.
"If you cannot lie, get out of politics. Anything you are involved in has its own rule. You are in politics to win, win first and let other things follow. Don’t be the one crying louder; lest you will be the one ‎they will take to court. If you are talking of honesty or morals, go and become an Imam or pastor. Politics cannot be the way it used to be.
"The challenges are more now, the variables have changed, the issues that we are going to face in 2015 are different from the ones we faced in 1999 and we must bear this in mind. Our society is not as grateful as it used to be, the values and morals have gone down. If you want to win, use the modern morality. We have worked for the people. Politics is not about sadaka (giving alms), politics reminds people of what you have done. Go out and remind the people of what we have done.” he said

Focus on real campaign - PDP tells APC, says APC plans fake poll rating for Buhari

A statement from  PDP below...
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has counseled the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its Presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari to focus on real campaign and try to win followers genuinely instead of applying cheap diversionary tactics.
PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh in a statement on Monday said “the APC so called ‘change agenda’ should be based on issues and not on change of dressing and religious gathering”.
“This election is not about political window-dressing and dramatizing. What will count is record of performance and antecedents, which President Jonathan stands taller than General Buhari.

“It is therefore not surprising that the APC and its Presidential candidate will resort to organizing a kangaroo opinion rating in a failed attempt to cover up their inadequacies and manipulate public perception in their favour.

This APC phantom poll has been designed in such a way to make the Nigerian public believe that 75 percent of the voting population is in support of General Buhari ahead the February 14 Presidential election.

Our findings reveal that the APC leaders are already intensifying effort to compromise some section of the media so as to ensure that the poll packaged by its foreign consultants is widely publicized.

Part of the strategy is a disguised mobile phone balloting application being circulated by the APC, whereby a curious click elicits a thank-you message from them and automatically register the unsuspecting phone user as having voted in support of General Buhari.

We are indeed shocked at the level the APC and its presidential candidate have sunk in their desperation for power. We hereby urge Nigerians, particularly the media to be wary of this plot to deceive the public and truncate our democratic process.

Our final advice to the APC is that they should focus on real campaign and stop playing to the gallery. Lies, no matter how much embellished can never take the place of truth and nothing built on falsehood stands.  This election is not about fake figures and falsehood. It is about the choice of the citizens. Nigerians have since made up their minds to continue identifying with their performing President and no amount of propaganda and misrepresentation by the APC can change this.

Signed:

Olisa Metuh
National Publicity Secretary

18 Female Soldiers Feared Kidnapped In Baga, Borno state

Sahara Reporters is reporting that Boko Haram militants may have kidnapped 18 female soldiers in Baga in Borno State. Report below...
Two sources told SaharaReporters that, out of 26 female soldiers posted to the military base of the Multinational Joint Task Force, only eight have so far been accounted for. The commander of the troops in the area, Colonel Kuti, has also not been found since the insurgents attacked the town on Saturday. Residents of Baga told our reporters that Boko Haram insurgents invaded their town and killed at least 55 people, including soldiers attached to MNJTF.
Both residents and security sources said the insurgent attack lasted close to 18 hours before the Islamist terrorists overpowered the troops and seized the military base. One military source said the attack took them by surprise. He said the troops made a gallant effort to repel the attack, but that hundreds of Islamist militants stormed the military base with high-caliber weapons. A resident revealed that the invading insurgents also burnt down parts of the fishing town. Bukar Kaka, a fisherman who fled from the town, said no fewer than 50 villagers, including five soldiers, were killed while others sustained wounds in the attacks. He said he saw soldiers fleeing.
A security source said the insurgent invaders also stormed other neighboring communities, shooting indiscriminately at people. He added that the militants also destroyed hundreds of houses and shops, often using fuel and other explosive devices.
In an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Senator Maina Ma’aji Lawan confirmed the insurgents’ attack on Baga and surrounding towns. He added that military troops and youth volunteers, popularly known as ‘civilian JTF, had attempted to repel the onslaught, but were overpowered by the invaders.

Religion must never be used by anyone to oppress or gain unfair advantage'- Buhari

He said this at the 8th edition of the Annual Lagos Thanksgiving Service that held yesterday. Buhari said religion must never be used to divide the nation or be used by anyone to oppress or gain unfair advantage.
"I am honoured to participate in this year's edition of the Lagos Thanksgiving Service. I am glad to know that this year's service has brought together Nigerians of all faiths just to thank and praise the Almighty God for his mercies. This is how it should be. Religion must never be used to divide or oppress others or gain unfair advantage. All my life, I have always held the belief that all Nigerians must be fee to worship God according to their beliefs. The duty of government is not religion, the duty of government is to ensure peace, security of all Nigerians, regardless of tribe, race or religion. And this is a commitment all of us must make in this service" He said

Fr. Mbaka alleges threat to his life, denies receiving money from Buhari

Rev, Father Ejike Mbaka says he has been receiving threat messages since his New Year Celebration message which described President Jonathan's administration as full of 'badluck' & poor performance. While delivering his sermon yesterday January 4th, the clergyman said he was not afraid of anybody and that he has delivered the message he was sent to deliver. He says he has been accused of receiving money from APC Presidential candidate Gen Muhammadu Buhari, a man he claimed he doesn't know in person.
"Tell them I am not afraid of them. I have said what I was asked to say. The only word I have for them is Isaiah 54:15,17: “Surely they shall gather, but because the gathering is not of God they shall scatter. No weapon fashioned against me shall prosper. They said Buhari gave me money, but I have never met with Buhari. I don’t know him in person. I only delivered the message I was given and I stand by that message because the future of this country is bleak with Jonathan on the saddle.” he said
Fr. Mbaka said he would have delivered his message to Patience Jonathan privately but efforts to reach her failed on several occasions.
"When she came here, I told her to give me her number so that I could give her messages, but thrice she refused. It was later she told one of the pastors with her to give me his number. So, before that message, I had called the number for two weeks but it was always the Personal Assistant to the pastor that picked the calls"he said
He said if President Jonathan is re-elected, "the next four years will be hell for the country. People are crying of hanger but then you will see what is hunger.”
