ASUU strike: Idle students take up menial jobs in Kaduna

ASUU strike: Idle students take up menial jobs in Kaduna

Some undergraduates in Kaduna have ventured into various vocations to keep them occupied as the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) persists, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
Some of them who spoke with NAN on Friday in Kaduna said that they had to find something to do, to keep their minds occupied and avoid trouble.
Grace Ocholi, a 300-level student of English at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, said she secured a temporary job as a fuel pump attendant at a petrol station in Sabon-Tasha area of the city to enable her earn some money until the end of the strike.
“Everyone in my house go out every morning to work, and my younger sisters go to school while I stay home and sleep awaiting for their return.
“I am not okay with staying idle so I decided to engage in something useful,” Grace said.
Seun Ali, an HND Computer Science student of Kaduna Polytechnic told NAN that he worked at a friend’s barbing saloon to earn some money instead of staying idle at home.
Another student, Henry Samuel of Mass Communication Department, Ahmadu Bello University, said he was assisting his father in selling tiles before he was admitted to the university.
Samuel said he had to continue manning the business until the end of the lecturers’ strike.
“So instead of wasting time waiting for the prolonged strike to end, I returned to continue from where I stopped,” he said.
The students advised their colleagues to engage in something meaningful while the strike lasted, so as not to fall into the temptation of going into crime due to idleness.
NAN recalls that ASUU had been on strike since June over the non-implementation of a 2009 agreement it entered with the Federal Government on the funding of public universities. (NAN)

Strike: Issue is beyond FG, ASUU – Ezekwesili

Strike: Issue is beyond FG, ASUU – Ezekwesili

imageFormer Education Minister Oby Ezekwesili says the ongoing Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike is now beyond government and the union.
Ezekwesili made this known to newsmen on the sidelines of a one-day dialogue on Education in Abuja on Thursday.
The dialogue, organised by Unity Schools Old Students’ Association (USOSA), had the theme, “Good Governance and National Unity.
“What I think is that the two parties so far seem to have failed to sign the ground rules for a principal negotiation.
“This is no longer a matter between the government and ASUU; this has become a matter between the people of Nigeria, government and ASUU.
“I think the citizens must now demand a neutral approach in the search for a solution to the kind of university system that we want to run. In this drive, we must see the need for urgency.
“There is no time because the rest of the world has used knowledge as a basis to completely leave us behind at the lower level of economic development ladder.
Ezekwesili, also a former World Bank Vice President, said the ASUU agreement was not signed during her tenure as minister.
“When I was the minister of education, I personally got Mr Gamaliel Onasede, a distinguished professional to lead the negotiation.
“But what subsequently happened after I left office in 2007 is open to interpretation of those who were part of the final negotiations that led to the agreement that was said to have been signed in 2009.
“And one thing that I do know is that there were many points of convergence between the Federal Government and ASUU as at the time in 2007 when I was leaving for Washington DC to resume my position as the vice president of World Bank.”
Earlier, Sen. Ahmed Makarfi, noted that Nigeria as multi-religious and multi-ethnic nation, had all the necessary ingredients to develop into a great nation.
Makarfi expressed regrets that lack of purposeful leadership from the country’s birth had stifled its march to progress.
“it doesn’t take much to see that if we have as a people harnessed and deployed our disparate individual endowments and abilities in pursuit and promotion of the collective good of the country, no force will be capable of stopping our historic march to greatness.
“unfortunately, we have so far failed to rally ourselves round a common cause that will see us approach issues from dispassionate perspectives,’’ he said.
He noted that government on its part had at various times come up with measures that would facilitate integration and unity, but ineffective implementation of policies had continued to deter progress.
Makarfi maintained that only an effective education system, delivered in appropriate environment, would enable Nigerians see things in their proper context.
Rep. Nnenna Ukeje, member, House of Representatives and USOSA, who co-chaired the event, said unity schools were the greatest investment in human resource that Nigeria had ever made.
Ukeje said instead of fostering the ideals for which unity schools were established, things that bind the country together were being down played, while those things that divide us were exaggerated. (NAN)

We’ve never seen Beyonce as scary as this! Her Sasha Fierce ego was most evident during her tour in New Zealand last week according to recent pictures surfacing the web today. The singer was met with 25 hefty men backstage after her concert to perform the ancestral war dance of the Māori people and a typical Beyonce, joined in beautifully.
Beyonce was spotted exerting the Miley Cyrus tongue-sticking swag, grimacing and bonding with the strapping Kiwis to chant, grunt and sound off chilling cries while performing the ancient rite at Auckland’s Vector Arena. The Haka, as the dance is fondly called is performed by the New Zealand All Blacks rugby team before each match – traditionally used to intimidate an opponent before battle.

The country also uses the dance to honor a distinguished guest.
The Crazy In Love singer, who was in the country for her October 19 Mrs Carter World Tour, seemed extremely touched by the thoughtful gift and looked delighted during the entire act.

Divorced actress, Jennifer Eliogu, has found love again, and this time, the man who is tickling her fancy is Emeka Morgan, the CEO of Morgan Entertainment, the man allegedly at war with the late musician, MC Loph’s family. The man, who has been accused of being behind the untimely death of the musician by some uncanny diabolical means, is said to be lighting up her fire after signing her up to his label when she ventured into music, and is spoiling her silly with all the good things of life. You will recall how Jennifer was chased out of her former husband’s home owing to her alleged promiscuous lifestyle, with the paternity of her child in doubt. The case made headlines when her husband came out in the open to declare that Jennifer was actually sleeping around with other men and he had no choice but to kick her out of their matrimonial home. The story then had it that Jennifer, whose husband was based in Europe, had visited her husband and after a few weeks claimed she was pregnant. Unfortunately for the actress, when she was delivered of the baby, it was discovered that the time difference for pregnancy and delivery did not match the time she claimed she was pregnant. Further investigation by the family of the husband revealed that the actress was all the while carrying another man’s child and had gone to Europe to place the paternity on her husband. On getting the information and also getting details of Jennifer’s frolicking with various men in Nigeria, the husband instructed his siblings to throw Jennifer and the new baby out of the duplex he rented for her in the Ajah area of Lagos.
